The conversation will be moderated by Bibiana Medkova (UMass MFA 2020 candidate), a multi-disciplinary artist whose work is at the intersection of installation, science, and curation. The exhibition Pau Atela’s (Re)Creations and MathStudio is currently on view alongside The Concinnitas Portfolio. He brings a sense of playfulness and experimentation to his work as both a mathematician and anartist as he strives to unravel many difficult - and some unsolvable -problems. He is the editor of a new book, What Are the Arts and Sciences?: A Guide for the Curious (Dartmouth College Press) and the curator of The Concinnitas Portfolio, an exhibition of prints, now on exhibition at the UMCA, based on mathematical expressions produced by eminent scientists and mathematicians as a “sampling of beautiful mathematics.”ĭuring the past two decades, Pau Atela has helped his students at Smith understand the creative process involved between art and math. This exhibition will feature examples from Atela’s MathStudio teaching practice as well as his own artworks. MathStudio is Atela’s ongoing creative studio space at Smith, focusing on process and dialogue between mathematics and art, where his students actively engage in the design and fabrication of 3-dimensional models that deal directly with aspects of mathematics.
